Can You Put Foil in an Air Fryer?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer because air fryer designs differ. Some manufacturers permit foil in limited positions while others advise against it. Your model's manual is the controlling source.

Quick answer

Check the manual first. If your manufacturer allows foil, keep it secured beneath food, away from the heating element, and clear of the basket or tray holes needed for airflow. Never preheat with loose foil.

Why model-specific instructions matter

Air fryers move hot air rapidly through and around the cooking chamber. Covering the basket floor or perforated tray can change that airflow, which can produce uneven cooking and may interfere with the appliance's intended operation.

Philips advises against baking paper and foil in several Airfryer models because covering the basket bottom reduces airflow. Ninja instructions for some oven-style models allow foil on an accessory but warn users not to cover ventilation holes. Those different directions are why a rule for one appliance should not be assumed to apply to another.

If your manual allows foil

  • Use only enough foil to support the food; do not line the whole cooking chamber.
  • Place food on the foil before the fan starts so the sheet cannot lift.
  • Keep foil below the top of the basket and well away from exposed heating elements.
  • Leave perforations and airflow routes open unless the manufacturer expressly shows otherwise.
  • Avoid acidic foods such as tomatoes or citrus on aluminum foil when practical, because acid and salt can react with aluminum.
  • Stop if the foil moves, sparks, smokes, or contacts a hot element.

When not to use it

Do not use foil when the manual prohibits it, when it cannot be held securely by food, or when it would sit close to an exposed heater. A sheet placed in an empty basket during preheating can be lifted by the fan.

Foil is also a poor solution for catching every drip if doing so blocks the designed grease path. Use the supplied pan or drip tray in the position shown by the manufacturer instead.

Safer cleanup alternatives

The supplied basket, crisper plate, baking pan, or drip tray is the default choice. Model-approved perforated parchment liners can be useful for some foods, but they still need to be weighted with food and used within the manual's temperature limits.

For sticky residue, let removable parts cool, then soak and wash them according to the care guide. Liners should not replace proper cleaning of grease from the appliance.
